First of all, you need to know that when they wear off, xanax and alcohol can deepen depression. You'll understand why as you read on.
About mixing xanax and alcohol: Both substances utilize some of the same receptors in the nervous system and brain. When activated, these receptors 'turn down the volume control' of signals passing through the system. They are both central nervous system depressants.
Taken together, they can be a dangerous combination. If too much of either/both is consumed, it will depress the signals that tell the lungs to breathe, so suffocation occurs. Or the combination can cause one to vomit. If the person is lying down in the wrong position when they vomit, it gets in their lungs and they suffocate.
Even if using these substances continuously doesn't kill a person, it is likely to cause the receptors to 'downregulate'. This means there are less receptors left to recognize both substances, so the substances aren't as effective at knocking one out any more. Therefore one must consume more of them to get the same effect. This is called 'tolerance'. If they can't, they may find the 'volume control' of signals passing through the central nervous system being turned up to the point where they're highly anxious, jittery and agitated to the point where they feel like they're crawling out of their skin.
Then there is the issue of abrupt discontinuation. Some people who abruptly discontinue these substances after weeks of use can develop seizures because of the excess signals flowing through their nervous system.
When you say you're 'seeing people about this problem but it's not working', it sounds like it's time to see a psychiatrist and therapist that *can* help you.
Remember, depression is most commonly a combination of how we feel about ourselves, our lives, and the people around us -- plus -- the changes in brain chemicals that make life so difficult to engage in. The combination saps our energy and self-worth.
There are antidepressant medications that can often alter some of the adverse brain chemical changes that occur during depressive states. Combine the meds with understanding why you become depressed, and then learning effective coping techniques, there's a good chance you can hold off being sucked down into the seemingly bottomless pit of depression.
It's your choice. And only you can make it.

Yes try Alcoholics Anonymous... i'm serious.
I have an illness in which depression is a symptom, so i know what depression is like... and i am a recovering alcoholic. I drank as a form of "self-medication" but in the long run, it didnt' help anything.
Getting wasted on alcohol is the worst thing a depressive person can do... alcohol is a depressant... so it just makes you worse... and if you will notice, two or three days after you drink you feel like crap.. why? because of the alcohol
if you stop the drinking your life will improve. it's going to take a little while, but you really need to do this for your mental health.
Find something else to do besides drinking. What about a hobby? Join a gym, start a walking program for yourself... get out of the house -- i know, you probably have to force yourself, but please try. Do a coulple AA meetings a week, or Narcotics Anonymous... or both. You will be surrounded by people with similar issues, and maybe you will get more ideas/help/support there.
I have posted a couple of websites below which have a lot of good information and links for help, if you'd like to look at them.
Take care of YOU.. no one else will.
Spend time with friends and family who do not drink.

Really, since you just finished detox and went right back to using, it's obvious you cannot control this yourself.
Absolutely you are at risk of dying from overdose or combination of these drugs!
Remember, you are NOT thinking straight while on drugs.
Xanax and whisky can be lethal.
Please call the detox/ rehab facility back and get help with the problem. if you truly desire to be sober (and/ or ALIVE) then this is your best option.
Youcould also call another detox program if you want.
Then stick with AA or Narcotics Annonyous to maintain the hard achievements
Good luck, and keep trying. it's worth it.

The two sites below talk specifically about coping with addiction in many ways. I'm sorry you're so depressed. I know it's not my fault, but I know there's no way it can be helping your situation.
I'd look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Both help you identify WHY you are having trouble and ways that you can help yourself through the tough times.
http://www.nacbt.org/whatiscbt.htm CBT
http://www.palace.net/~llama/psych/dbt.html (CBT for Dummies. I know you're not a dummy. But the "dummy" series usually is very comprehensive and I think you need the best source that covers everything, and that's what the "dummy" books do.)
http://www.palace.net/~llama/psych/dbt.html DBT

DBT workbook
I know how hard it is to get over an addiction. I used to be addicted to sugar. I know it's not as dangerous as addiction to drugs and alcohol, but it is just as hard to get over.

I hope you can get some help soon. It's hard to do something like this on your own.

Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT, so if you're depressed there's no way you should be touching alcohol.
The other is a tranquillizer for anxiety. I think you should be talking to a doctor about your meds.
Staying CLEAN is not an easy job...stay away from those situations and people that make you feel like doing it.

narcotics anonymous or AA. get some help, you WILL eventually kill yourself from this habbit. you would not be as depressed if you would get off drugs. it is hard, but you can do it. make sure you go to a rehab or something. Or a detox center to get off the xanex as it can cause seizures.

Why don't you go get some antidepressants instead? Self-medicating the way you are is a stupid waste of your life. Besides, you are doing it with two depressants. Are you saying that you like being depressed?

I never understood why anyone enjoys getting that intoxicated. How can you function. Give it up. Life aint that bad. Do anything but get intoxicated. Wash the car, mow the grass, go to a movie, call a friend, take a walk, paint your house, anything but get intoxicated. Please before its too late.

Get some counselling and please, stop doing it to yourself. Alcohol is a depressant and prolonged use can't be helping your mental condition.
