Most people have no training with parachutes, unlike the pilots of fighters. They would have a much better chance with the plane.

Take it from someone that jumps out of planes for fun. There is not enough room to put on a parachute in a commercial plane. Everyone would have to wear the rigs before getting on the aircraft. Even if everyone had a parachute there is no safe way to exit the aircraft. You would need special equipment and training to survive the 560 + mph winds and 30,000 foot plus altitudes. Without extra oxygen and protective gear you would die in that environment. The fastest skydiving jumps are at 150 knots, not 500 + knots and are made from 18,000 feet MSL or lower. Just getting out of the airplane could kill you as you'd be slammed into the door on exit. The next issue would be landing a parachute. Most likely this case would use rounds and you'd just have to do a parachute landing fall. That is easy enough to learn. The steering of the canopy would require training. I'd say that about 25% of the people on any flight are not healthy enough to survive a normal skydive. The very young, old, and anyone not in good health would have no shot at surviving the exit, parachute flight or landing.
if every seat was an ejection seat then maybe you could save a handful of lives, but the extra training and complete redesign of the aircrafts would not be cost effective.
In the big picture. commercial airline flights are very safe and not something to worry about.

As said above, most accidents happen when the plane is too close to the ground for parachute operation. And when a 41,000 feet, opening the doors to bail out would cause massive decompression and you would probable suffocate before you had time to open your chute, what with the thining air and all. Parachutes would only be useful in small personal aircraft. Although if the entrie plane had a ballistics parachute attached like some of the smaller planes that might help-(Ballistic parachutes are one huge parachute that deploy from the roof of the plane in an emergiency.)

1. Parachuting out at 10,000m in way below zero temperatures and extremely thin oxygen might not be as pleasant as spending your last few minutes in the comfort of the aircraft and some chance of a safe landing. You are likely to die of exposure or lack of oxygen.
2. Training 100-300 people to use a parachute in a couple of minutes is going to be a little difficult. You might not be able to establish that you had met your duty of care! Especially for infants or the elderly.
3. Airlines would have to pretty much halve the passenger space to fit in enough parachutes.
4. Parachutes are normally not a one-size fits all proposition. What are you going to do with someone who is very large, or very small? Get them mixed up and the large person plummets to the earth, and the small one never gets down!
So there are a few practicalities to iron out before making this a really practical proposition.

Parachutes would be absolutely useless on commercial aircraft. The only accidents that happen are on takeoff or landing. What good would a parachute do you there?
When jet fighter pilots bail out it's b/c their aircraft has been shot --or-- they have engine failure in flight. Commercial planes of course do not have to worry about being shot, and - IF - they have an engine failure they shut it down and can fly on the remaining engines. A 747 which has four engines can actually land on just one engine.
There was even an incident several years ago where a Canadian 767 ran out of fuel ... YIKES... and the pilot was able to "glide" the plane down to a safe landing on an abandoned military air strip.

There are literally too many passengers on an airliner to carry parachutes for all of them. In an emergency, it would be very difficult to get all of those passengers suited up and in parachutes, not to mention out of the airliner in time to safely get them down. Jet fighters are equipped with an ejection seat that is pretty much automatic. On an airliner, ejecting even 100 people would be a major feat.

If you're that concerned about aircraft safety, take your own parachute, but don't be surprised when Anti Terrorism squads surround you at the Departure gate!
Also, as a general rule, Fighter planes get shot at and Passenger planes don't.

umm probably cos when your in a jet fighter you pop up from the top... and in a commercial airplane there is no top... if u know what i mean haha
