I do not understand it, even in the context of the story it doesn't make sense.

Ezekiel 4:12-13 Eat the food as you would a barley cake; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel." The Lord said, "In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them."

The following is John Gill's exposition on this aspect of human dung used to cook the limited food:

"and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of men, in their sight: the prophet was to take human dung, and dry it, and then cover the cakes or loaves of his mixed bread with it, and burn it over them, and with it bake it; which must be a very disagreeable task to him, and make the food very nauseous, both to himself and to the Jews, in whose sight it was done; and this shows scarcity of fuel, and the severity of the famine; that they had not fuel to bake with, or could not stay till it was baked in an oven, and therefore took this method; as well as points at what they were to eat when carried captive, as follows:"

It was an acted parable foretelling what the disobedient Israelites will have to do in famine caused by a siege of their city.

But note that when Ezekiel protested, God told him to use cow's dung instead. Note also the the amount of food was very limited, or rationed, as in times of famine : 10 ounces (283 g) of bread and 1/2 pint (300 mL) of water for the whole day. At THIS time, more was available but since Ezekiel was acting out a parable to show what will happen, he was limited to only this amount.

Well, due to restrictions on my hubby's beef intake, I've made a few modifications to our grilled food that still gives you the "feel" of a hamburger. I've actually started to like them too. Here's a recipe if you are interested: 6 large portobello mushrooms 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 cloves garlic, crushed and minced black pepper A-1 steak sauce Wash the mushrooms very carefully to remove any dirt. Remove the stems and set the mushrooms aside. Combine the olive oil, crushed garlic, lemon juice & pepper together in a small pot on the grill. Cut the largest mushrooms into halves or into strips. Brush the portobellos with the olive oil mixture. On a covered grill over medium coals, grill the portobellos stem-side down for about 7 to 8 minutes. Turn and grill the tops of the portobello mushrooms for about 6 to 8 minutes longer. The grilled portobello mushrooms should be tender and nicely browned. I serve them with an A-1 steak sauce and they taste wonderful. You can serve them on a bun and add any healthy condiments (lettuce, onions, mustard, etc.) and fixings that you would add to a hamburger.

A prophet is God's messenger, a voice from the Lord. You will find often in the Bible that these men of God were often commanded by God to do some very odd or strange things.

James 5:10
Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

This was an example or sign to the people of what God was going to do.

Ezekiel was a sign that the people of Israel will be in famine.

Because Ezekiel had a nervous breakdown that resulted in him hearing voices and seeing visions. people have been getting carried off into slavery for thousands of years before Ezekiel. Getting over-run by the enemy is hardly an act of God.

Ezekeiel was a prophet, God asked him so the prophet would perform a prophetic similitude.

The action itself was a prophecy of how the Israel nation was acting.
