It was probably on it's way out when I bought it a year ago. Though I didn't help it much, pulling heavy loads and trailers. Just fixed the OD off button as well.

The owner's manual says in the transmission section, "Operating in Overdrive "OFF" gives more engine braking than Overdrive and is useful for ascending or descending hills or when towing."

But then in the towing section it says, "If your vehicle is equipped with an Electronic 4-Speed Automatic (E4OD or 4R70W) transmission, operate in Overdrive... When descending a steep grade with a trailer, operate in Drive rather than Overdrive."

So, I'm a little confused as to the best way to drive with a trailer as even the Owner's manual contradicts itself. In one section it says to tow in Drive and in another section it says to tow in Overdrive.

when you tow thirty percent of rated capacity or greater [diesel engine] turn off the overdrive[ ie . if max gvw is 10,000 combined and you are at vehicle plus 3000], let off the throttle at the shift points [newer trucks cut fuel at shift points making this unnecessary] change the tranny fluid and filter at every 30k Miles[15k if you have installed a reprogrammer or chip] and don't forget to drain the torque converter] you may wish to install a trans temp gauge [ford thinks that it's important enough to include one on the dash now] while your truck already has an aux trans cooler if temps are staying high as you tow a larger one [aftermarket] may be necessary.
good luck

The best info I can give you is :

Put a remote trans cooler on there.
They are very cheap - compared to a 2000 dollar tranny again.

I always tow in drive when I pull a heavy load - but if I am going long distance I'll use overdrive once to speed.

As long as the trans is not kicking in and out of overdrive trying to keep up you will be fine.

1. ADD THE TRANSMISSION COOLER.

2. CHANGE THE FLUID EVER 24,000 MILES OR 2 YEARS.

3. WITH A LOAD DO NOT USE OVERDRIVE.

4. NEVER OVERHEAT THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THIS WILL CAUSE THE TRANS FLUID TO GET HOTTER THAN NORMAL.

Add an extra cooler, this will help it last longer. Depending on rearend gear, I would lock out od when towing. This is how I do my 2001.
