Because we are larger and use up more energy, also men have more muscle mass to sustain so need more proteins. It is not that simple... it also depends on the size and build of the person, their activity level and metabolism etc...

For men and women of equal weight, generally speaking the woman will carry more of her weight as fat, but a man will carry more muscle.

Muscle uses more energy than fat, hence the man would need more calories (assuming that energy expenditure was the same).

Healthy range of fat for a man is 10-25%, but for women it's around 21 - 35% depending on age.

This is all based on averages, and not everyone is the same. A light weight female marathon runner is still going to need more calories than a man who works in an office and does no exercise.

It doesn't have to be- your calorie intake level is based on your level of activity and body size.

I think the old calorie charts were based on when more men had more physical jobs and were assumed to be larger framed than women.

A small framed man who sits at a desk job all day shouldn't have any more calories than a woman of a similar build who sits next to him.
