and is it better to have the PS3 standing up, or sitting down?

The led on the controller will stop blinking or press the ps button and it will display the battery status.
better to keep ps3 standing up cause the hot air can rise quicker from the vents rather than depending on the fan to push the air out if u leave it flat.

I have my PS3 in horizontal position. It was running for more, than 8 hours non-stop. No problems, just it has to be no less than 10 cm between PS3 and the wall.
In order to chec charge status of sixaxis - press and hold PS button for two-three seconds - the screen will display battery status in left lower corner.

just leave it charging and then when the red lights stop blinking that means its done charging
also its better for the ps3 to stand up so the heat came come out better

i have my ps3 standing up and have had no problems with it at all. and when you are at the home page, tap the center ps button and a little battery symbol will show up. the more bars you have the stronger the charge is.
