We wanted to get a new front deck, and possibly a new front door that is durable. Our company we went with that did our roof, they wanted to charge us 9,000 for both, is that reasonable or is it a rip off?? The new deck they offer, is not made of wood, the pieces are interlocked securely. What company would you recommend if that price is too high that would get the job done, offer a great warranty on both projects, reasonable price and most importantly a quality product?

In order to judge the price I need to know the square footage of the deck, and the size and type of your front door.

The decking they are opffering you is a bit more expensive than a pressure treated limber deck, but it is well worth it. You will have very little maintenance issues, other than washing it down with mild soap and water once in a while.

It's OK to ask for a detailed breakdown of costs. How much for labor? How much for the decking material? How much for the door? Can you save a few dollars if you supply the door? Explain to the contractor, that you are just trying to get educated on Time and materials costs for other projects around the home.

There is one point that concerns me, though. I never ask an electrician to do plumbing, or a finish carpenter to do electrical work. I would NEVER ask a roofer to do complex construction or carpentry, especially with a load bearing situation like a deck!!

I suggest you call a contractor that specializes in decking and renovations of this type. Hire the RIGHT people to do the job.

Like these folks said, it depends on the size of the deck and the kind of door. You say your decking material is not wood. That may be part of the price issue. There have been some incredible new decking materials that have come out in the past few years; expensive but almost indestructible and low maintenance.

Get all the details he based his bid on and shop it around some other contractors.

Get more than one estimate, cost depends on size of the deck and materials used. Check prices on doors and decking and get estimate for the size deck you want at someplace like Lowes, Home Depot or Menards, at leas they can give you a price on what the materials will cost, then you will know whether you are getting ripped off on the labor.

depending on the size of your deck is how much it will cost...interlocking? is this one of those new wood replacements such as the new lumber that is recycled wood and plastics? if i were you i would go to home depot the contractors desks have programs in thier computer for all of that both wood and the new lumber recycled that way you can see what you are getting and how much it will cost. now as for a deck that will new rot, peel or whatever those new lumbers that recycled are the best you never have to do any repairs or staining or power washing maintennce free they are.. as far as warranties go most of by the way home depot has quality contractors that are not outlandish in their labor costs. i think it a better deal.

Attaching the plastic so it stays during high winds would be an issue. What you can do (something I did a long time ago) is to buy a cheap sliding door and mount it outside the existing door. You will have to extend the framing with 2x4s and paint them but will end up with the equivelant of a storm door that does not have to be removed and looks fine.

with out knowing the size of the new deck, it is hard to tell. doors can range from 200.00--3500.00 or more, again, to many options to give honest answer, but get two more estimates and find out if you are getting ripped off. good luck,
