I found a flea on my dog, she's never had them before. I have a 6 year old 70 pound black lab.
I also have a 15 month old who is active and runs around the whole house.
How can I safely and effectively get rid of the fleas?

We already use frontline and bathe her in the flea and tick shampoo.
What do we do about the house?

Don't bathe her. If you bathe an animal 2 days before or after applying Frontline the Frontline will not work. Frontline is excellent on fleas and probably the safest product available because it stays on the skin of your dog.
Get a housespray from a vets like Staykil, Indorex, Acclaim or Skoosh. Never use ANY products from stores, not for your pets or your house. Shampoos don't work, don't bother, they just counteract the Frontline.

Use Frontline or Anvantix on your dog - Keep the dog away from the 15 month old for about a day after applying it.
Edit - Have a professional come in to treat your house and property - DIY flea treatments are for the most part, ineffective.
Also, talk to your vet about switching to Advantix - Just like humans, not everything works for every dog...

She may have sensitive skin. You were smart to switch back to the veterinarian approved products like advantage, but if she has skin sensitive to the topicals she might need a systemic (oral) kind. Try to find a vet in your area who has a product called Comfortis. It is a once a month pill for fleas. The only common side effect is vomiting on the first use, and if the vomiting is after 1 hr, you do not need to re-dose. I will say, though, it does not protect against ticks. However, depending on where you live, and how often your dog is outside in woodsy area, that may not be a concern for you.

You should use a mixture of boric acid and salt. Boric acid acts as a desiccant and dries out the exoskeleton of the flea, but does not have any side effect on human beings or animals. Check this out http://pests.in/fleas.html

You won't find all three (best, most effective, least harmful) in any one way.
Since it's such a mild infestation I'd feed her 6 brewer's yeast with garlic tabs a day. 3 with am feeding and 3 with pm feeding.
It works. But you have to feed it every day, no missing days and all year round. It honestly works.
Go to any dog supply website and you'll find brewers yeast tablets.

Frontline Spray. It's not toxic, as soon as it is dry there is no problem for either the dog or the puppy.
