For that price you'll find it difficult to find a camera that can focus well in short distances. If your friend really wants to do good photography ask him to buy a DSLR. It's much more expensive but the quality is much better and, best of all, it is more flexible to take photos.

For microstock (which I guess means still lives of small objects) you need to be able to control depth of field so that all the objects are in focus. This means that you need to set a small aperture (that is, a high F-stop). Cheap cameras usually don't allow you to control the aperture.

Try the best Canon he can get or buy still good slightly used cameras from photographers upgrading to a new model etc.

If he bought brand new retail, he can only afford not so great cameras with 200 dollars.

These are my favorite brands, Canon, Olympus, Casio, Pentax.

I would suggest Canon but I know that they do not run for under $200. You can always shop around at Best Buy, Target and Circuit City.

Like Antoni said, at that price point forget it(with digital)...UNLESS!!

You can find a good used film SLR with a decent lens(get one with a 50mm f/1.8 if you can(I'd stick with Nikon/Canon/Pentax).

Then get a scanner and scan the film shots and upload that way.

For that price range I would reccomend he research the pansonc and samsung point & shoots which I believe have great value for the their prices.
personally i would tell him to wait until he can afford an entry level Nkon or Pentax dslr.
