If it could not load Windows, the OS could be messed up. Try this repair that leaves all files intact:

First Step:

Update your windows files because an unprotected, unpatched Windows XP installation will get infected within minutes of connecting to the Internet.
Now install a ccleaner on your pc (you can download it form http://www.ccleaner.com):
1. Before first use, check under Options, Advanced, and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
2. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer". Deleting cookies will require re-entry of user names and passwords on next visit to sites that require users log in.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
Clean all (optionally, except cookies) in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.
4. Then click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system. Click exit.

Step Two: Viruses/Trojans
AVG AntiSpyware for Windows 2000 and XP only -
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from AVG AntiSpyware
Save the file to your desktop so you can locate it. Double-click the AVG Anti-Spyware icon on the desktop launch the set up program.
The installation will require a restart of the computer.
Launch AVG Anti-Spyware to update to the latest definition files.
On the main screen select the "Update" icon
Click "Start Update". The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you have problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-Spyware -http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

AVG Anti-Spyware Settings
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
In the Settings screen click "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
DE-Select "Only if threats were found"
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan"
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process. Be patient as this may take a little time.
While scanning, ewido will list any infections found on the left side.
When the scan is completed, the recommended action should be set to Quarantine. If not, click Recommended Action and set it there. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right side.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

Hi I had this same problem with my old Siemens. I turned it on it reached the dos part and then a blue screen sometimes appeared and it turned off. I though that the problem with my computer was that it was overheating. So if yours is quite old try removing the case and turning it on, then it wont overheat. If this isnt the problem it could be the RAM, give it a clean or install more, memory is crucial to the start up and maybe you dont have enough to run your O/S. If its none of these problems then try and reboot your computer. Press F8 while it is starting up and press reboot. If this doesnt work a last resort would be to reinstall your o/s, which could make you loose all your files. Hope this helps. Kieran
