Why does the president of Cuba go by the name Fidel Castro?

Anna: That's my point. Why doesn't he go by Fidel Alejandro or Fidel Ruz? Why does he go by Fidel Castro?

Fidel is his given first name, Alejandro is his given second name. Castro was is father's surname, Ruz was his mother's maiden name. This is common nomenclature in most Spanish speaking countries/ By most Western countries standards is name is Fidel Castro.

Well, Fidel means faithful, and his father, Angel Castro, bequeathed his name to all his children.

Having somewhat religious names, like Jesus, Angel, and Fidel, is rather a common occurrence in Spanish-speaking countries.

Because it's his name. He originally wanted to use the name Nikita Khrushev but that was being used at the time.
