Ask for business and banking references. These may be other vendors or other clients. (If it is a big deal, call a bank officer at your bank and ask them to check their bank references. How long they have had the account in this name, if it is frequently overdrawn, if they bounce checks, if there are complaints from vendors for non-payment, etc.)
Check with the Better Business Bureau and see if there are any outstanding unresolved complaints.
Check and confirm how long he or she has been doing THIS business in THIS location. Unscrupulous people change business names and locations frequently. If he/she has been there in business more than 3 years, that's a good sign.
