All the other answers appear negative so I will enlighten you with their life history.

LIFE HISTORY. The eggs sixteen in number are laid in a leathery egg-case or purse which is gradually extruded from the mothers body as it is filled with eggs. When it is full and closed up,it is carried about for some time by her then deposited in a crevace and receives no further attention. The young are of course vey small at birth, paler in colour, and at first wingless, but otherwise like adults. They moult six times before attaining full growth, and they eat their skins after moulting. The cockroaches do not bite or sting us,at least ours certainly do not, though travellers report that their toenails are eaten to the quick by Brazilian cockroaches while they sleep! The harm they do is due to the fact that they destroy our food supplies. This is partly by eaten them;often a scak of flour ,has on beinf opened at the end of a sea voyage, being found to be full to the brim with live cockroaches. Still more do they foul our food and our houses with their evil odour, traceable to stink glands under the tail ends of their bodies. They will eat almost anything ,animal or vegetable[even leather] ,and especially fond of sweet or starchy foods. As they cannot climb a smooth surface, they are easily caught in a pie dish with beer and sugar at the bottom of it.A hedgehog is said to do a good work.
They are wholly nocturnal and run to their holes if a light is brought into the room in which they are foraging at night. By day they lie under mats or in cracks or spaces behind the skirting boards,or the like.
Other large species is the ship cockroach, periplaneta americana[american vagabond]which is larger than the c ommon ,and has in both sexes, wings, larger than the body.

And so farting and being fed sugar must be a myth.

You may be thinking of a wingless variety of cockroach called Gromphadina portentosa, the common name being Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. This large cockroach has a defensive mechanism that when prodded it will taking in air and the exhale it rapidly causing a hissing noise like a snake, quite impressive but completely harmless. These cockroaches were actually being sold as pets by some idiots in UK. If they got loose in your house they would multiply and you would regret it! It is too cold in UK outside for them.
