Because it is ruled by the Moon. The moon is ruled by the Goddess...thus the Night is a feminine phase. Women are mysterious.
The Sun is masculine. While energetic, virile and envigorating...it's not quite the same.

A billion stars and sometimes a moon, beat out a few clouds and a sun you cannot look up at. There are very few love songs or love poems about a sunny day and thousands about the night and its sky.

The night is colder, calmer, unfamiliar and even strange. It is more dynamic since a twinkle of light or star or the light of the moon can change the feeling in the atmosphere that can affect our emotions. We become more emotionally sensitive at night due to the absence of strong lights and other visual and audio distractions...our world comes closer to us and becomes more intimate.
