Feathers themselves don't really need any preservation. Just keep them clean and in a zip lock bag and they should be just fine. If you have any skin with the feathers, clean off all the meat and fat from the skin (a wire brush works fine), and rub with powdered borax.You can buy this at any grocery store in the laundry soap isle.
As far as getting out of Rio - a variety of transportation methods are available: bus, car, plane, boat, donkey, bicycle, horse, walking, scooter, balloon, hang glider, rogue parade float, crawling, motorcycle, truck, wheelchair, tricycle, skateboard, unicycle, surfboard . . . pick one and go.
