And why is the largely democratic-controlled congress throwing more money to this "effort"?

Let’s imagine that France invades the US to release its people from the tyrannous clutches of fast food chains and daytime shopping channels (well known weapons of cultural mass destruction). Thousands of innocent Americans are accidentally killed in the process. Would the Americans people welcome a French army of occupation or would there be some kind of armed resistance? If so, would they be considered freedom fighters or insurgents? Rather than acknowledge failure, would the French seek to blame the Mexicans and the Canadians for the internal fighting?

According to the very well-respected Alan Greenspan, it's mostly about oil. Our business there is:

- Sell oil leases to our friendly oil companies who will trade oil in American greenbacks. Oil prices will continue to soar as supply flattens out and demand increases. (see "peak oil")
- Profit through munitions and privatized support operations. No-bid contracts are wonderful if you own the right stocks.
- Wag the dog. If you are incompetent at running the government, you can distract the public by spinning a war story. Although our efforts were a quick invasion and a prolonged occupation. Can you really call this a war?
- Prop up the economy by massive deficeit spending. Nobody will notice that your friends will get even more rich and powerful. The haves are getting more and the have nots are getting less.

It's a lot easier to sell security services, support services, and military hardware when there is conflict in the world. Some Americans are also profiting through drug trade (opium).

Let's face the facts that this country is controlled by a military-industrial complex. Our media has lost its integrity and has become an effective propaganda machine.

Bush thought he could storm into Iraq and depose Saddam and be treated like liberators. Instead we destroyed their government and infrastructure. Bush thought if we dumped a billion a week or more we could buy the country back into civilization.
Al Quada is a bunch of rats but they have convinced enough locals that we are the occupying forces. Like in Vietnam we cannot win a war against a countries own people.
The Dems are a hundred per cent better than the Republicans. However, all the politicians are afraid to take any real drastic steps (like cutting off that billion a week) to stop the war.

We have no right to be in Iraq. Iraq was falsely linked with Al Qaida by the Bush administration, and a story about weapons of mass destruction was fabricated in order to invade the country.

A superpower can only remain a superpower if it continues to wage war, gain assets, and provide revenue for its corporations.

If we were to stop attacking other countries, we would have no way to test new weapons and to sustain our wealth.

Stealing the Iraqi oil.

The Democrats do not want to be falsely blamed for what will happen to the U.S. troops when Bush keeps them in Iraq without funding.
