I want to make sure I don't mess up my laptop. I know I can get wireless in cafes and such, but if I have the opportunity to use a land connection, do I need anything special (like an adapter) as well?

It is the SAME everywhere. Just bring along an Ethernet or Cat5e cable with "RJ45" or 8P8C modular plugs at both ends.

The Ethernet cable is standard just like the phone line is. However for recharging your laptop you may want to get a power adaptor for the electrical outlets... and get a surge protector. I'm sorry to say to the guy above but bringing your own modem isn't going to help you at all. You don't need one you just using your wireless card and Ethernet port. You need a modem if its going to be your own Internet connection. If you were going to purchase Internet while you were up there yes but there might be compatibility problems with utilising a modem that is made for the US. But if your just visiting

Power Adaptor, Surge Protector your standard Ethernet wire and wireless card.
