It's not just the cables, it's the whole interface.

Optical drives are currently limited in transfer speed (to about 50x) because the limit is that if you spin the CD/DVD too fast, the stresses may shatter it, especially if the disk has minute stress fractures . IDE can easily handle that transfer speed. Indeed, the latest incarnations of IDE on MBs are actually EIDE - faster, but also backwards compatible to IDE.

SATA is becoming more popular, but optical SATA drives may be more expensive than IDE.

The SATA standard however is getting more 'clever' in being able to optimise data transmission thru such things as "QOS" (Quality Of Service), etc - but nobody has yet made a fuss about such things being essential for CD/DVD drives yet.

They are differnet type of interface... IDE is old n slower whereas SATA is faster... SATA stands for serial ATA, which is a fairly new interface found on newer motherboards. Plain old ATA, sometimes called parallel ATA, is another term for the older IDE interface, which has been around for many years. What you need to keep in mind is that you can only use the type of hard drive which matches your motherboard. If your system has a regular IDE connecter, you need a regular ATA drive. If you machine has the SATA connector, you need a SATA drive. The newer interface supports faster throughput, easier recognition of multiple drives and greater reliability, but none of that is really important from the average end-user's standpoint. IDE and ATA are essentially different abbreviations for the same thing. :)

SATA interface is better when you are talking of hard drives. BUT when talking of CD or DVD drives, there is no performance difference. SATA interface is becoming popular for optical drives because new motherboards support more SATA ports (4 to 8) than IDE (just 1 port for 2 devices).

SATA is faster than IDE, and the new SATA2 is even faster then that. It is mainly for the Hard drive as the cd/dvd roms do not need the kind of speed that hard drives do.

SATA is better than IDE

transfer rate SATA II --> 300 MB/sec
transfer rate SATA I --> 150 MB/sec
transfer rate IDE (or PATA) --> 66.7 MB/s - 100.0 MB/s - 133 MB/s

The main factor is what type of connector your motherboard will support. Cannot put a SATA on an IDE connector, and viceversa.

Yeah.

150/300(sata2) vs 133/100/66/33

CD/DVD is not a big deal since they aren't being pushed.

Does matter for HDD, though.
