check out the lyrics of Midnight Oil from Australia. US Forces, Beds are Burning, Blue Sky Mine, Power and the Passion, Species Deceasies and many more. They were Political Students, the lead singer is now in his 50's and in Australia's Parliament. The band had quite some success in the US also.

I think the best song was REM Losing My Religion it is a powerful song for me! Also The Police Spirits In The Material World and Dave Matthews Band So Much To Say and Running From And Angel Hootie And The Blowfish and Gloomy Sunday Sarah McLachlan

Good songs already, I would add "Hunger Strike" by Temple of the Dog. "Ana's Song" by Silver chair. One is about drug addiction and the other anorexia.
