You can but code says you should not.I took a piece of plywood 36x36 and glued 9 ceramic tiles-12x12,grouted them and put in under the fire pit.Protects my Trex deck just fine.

Yes, I put in a concrete patio (stamped and stained to look like slate) on the outer edge I have a fire pit with a hand made iron and brass hood. Its quite sharp. It was featured in a local home and garden magazine. Did it all by myself for no other reason than to get into my wife's pants more often.

Yes but beware of sparks that coud damage it. Perhaps a fame arresting substance should be spreak out of about a 6' radius.

Yes, as long as the legs of the firepit don't heat up where they contact the wood. You might want to consider putting something reflective under it to help protect the wood as well.

You can put a grill mat under it they are suppose to be flame retardant,
