First, get a visa to live and work in France. Once you are there, check with the local authorities about becoming a permanent citizen.

Found out if you have a grandparent from an EU country, check out what these are exactly, and see if you can get citizenship of that country on this basis. Once you are an EU national, you can live anywhere in the EU, including France (and Spain and Italy), but you will have to sort out a residency permit once you have moved into the country, and this is an important formality, and takes a couple of months. You will need to have a job lined up so that you can prove that you can support yourself (a letter from an employer is enough), or be able to prove that you have a relationship with a French national.

You might not need to renounce your US citizenship, double nationalities are more common over here than you might think.

But about France - you will need to learn the language, definitely. You will also need to find a bilingual lawyer to help you with documents down the line - they exist.

Why do you want to renounce your citizenship? The Americans can kick you out and another country may not want to take you in. They have their own problems and might not want to have yet another foreigner there. You can't really go and ask for political asylum. If you want to emmigrate, call the French, Spanish or Italian embassy, they can tell you what you need to do. What do you have to offer the other country? Are you in a profession that is highly sought after? Probably not or you would have an answer to your questions. What languages do you speak? To speak the language of the particular country is the number 1 requirement, well that, and a big bank account.
