In 1987 I knew everything there was to know about a computer, both on my desk and in a car's diagnostis and then they shut down my plant. After transferring to 2 other GM locations and PC's started becoming cheaper and listening to friends talk about the internet and the classes they were taking at work for both business and personal use an such phrases as "down load, software, hard drives floppy discs and a mouse started getting curious about them again cause I felt left out of a lot of conversations. I sat down in front of one at work one day and couldn't even figure out how to turn one on. So I started taking classes in computers after a couple of "kids" made the comment about me in the "stone age". One guy came to my rescue and said he had a degree in Computer Science, graduated in 1985 and now knew nothing about them. Since most of my machines on my line were "computer friendly" for diagnosing problems I dove in deeper into them and their functions. We , at Delco use to print shipping labels and turned in a copy of them everday for the Supervisor to enter into the computer. One day the company came out and installed Compaq computers on our lines for faster location of shipped parts. So I bought a Compaq with windows XP and every modern upgrade they had for a computer. Now I could learn exactly what ,how, everything else that could be done at work on a PC. One thing though I didn't know, and neither did my partner on a "Jobsetting classification" was when bar codes were introduced and they were on the shipping labels we printed off the PC. Well a couple of times we forgot to scan the barcode on the shipping label and to save ourselves some time and "leg work" we tried scanning a pack of cigarettes' bar code and it went thru. So we did it a couple more times that week. We sent calipers to Saganaw and that's how we (our plant got paid / credit) for componant parts. Saginaw sent word to our plant that they weren't paying X amount of $ for 2 pks of Winstons' and a pack of Salem's(ha,Ha) !!!! So That is why I got one , paid over $1200 for everything both for work and to send my friends silly e-mails and jokes

Your old computer needs the following things done- 1. A thorough clean up of dust that has accumulated over 8 years. 2. A full format of the hard disk.(This will remove all the fragmentation and all that, but backup first.) 3. A fresh install of whichever operating system you prefer.(I am assuming it is Windows). Since the computer is 8 years old, I'm assuming that it either has a Pentium 4 or at most, a Dual-Core. The latter would be better but P4 isn't bad either, considering your usage. You may need to add more RAM. If you are gonna install Windows 7, I'd recommend at least 2 GB. That's all. P.S.-In case you go for a new computer, please consider a laptop (the new "ultrabooks" would be well suited to your needs.)

The ORIGINAL reason when I bought my FIRST computer was for word processing (school assignements) and a small database use and a couple of games. That was the Commodore 64. (Yes, i am THAT old!)

The original reason why I bought my fist PC was to catalogue my vinyl record collecton (database use) - to which never got started up to this day! Sad, isn't it?

I got my first computer when I was 7. I think my parents bought it because they thought that I would need it for school.

I bought a 25kb (yes, kb) many years ago. It was then a top of the range computer, and I bought it just to see what they were capable of (not much at that time :-) ).
