Like, when the problems obvious, ie; noise late at night during week-days, if they were reasonable they wouldn't be doing it in the 1st place. And if they're unreasonable doesn't that mean that the chances of an understanding discussion turning sour are high?

Unfortunately, I seem to have better results with thoughtless types if I snarl, and cold war them

I'm not so sure it means they are unreasonable; they might honestly not realize that you can hear the music. I'd start there by simply saying in a completely friendly way, "Hey, I'm not sure if you're aware, but we can hear your music when you play it at night. I just wanted to let you know. By the way, we usually go to bed around 10."

If you talk you can always say you tried.

If you try to talk and they get rude, then when you call the police to report the noise complaint you can say that you tried to get them to turn it down, you were reasonable, but they won't and were not reasonable about it.

The chances of them understanding a reasonable discussion if they are smashed, plastered, drunk or otherwise unreasonable is well...not very reasonable, but you have to a least make the effort. Who knows maybe someone there will apologize and actually shut the stupid loud drunks up.

Of course if you are an adult the chances of this discussion devolving into a fight are pretty rare, but if they are being unreasonable in the first place there is no telling how far they are willing to sink.

But, at least you can say you tried to be reasonable, as you load the shotgun and take aim at their stereo speakers (not that I am recommending that, on the contrary I am not, it is totally unreasonable).

We've tried talking to our idiot neighbors and they just don't understand that anything they are doing is wrong or annoying.
They think that everyone is picking on them although several neighbors have said things to them about their neglected dogs and junk cars parked in the yard. Someone called their chain of command (most of the neighborhood is military) and they seem to think its us so they've been trying to get revenge on us. (We were NOT the ones who turned them in.) So far they've tried to make my husband drive off the road twice, and they've been leaving their outside lights on all night, only on our side of the house so our bedroom is lit like the Vegas strip (which is why I am on the computer at 3:00 AM).
Basically, my experience is that you just can't reason with stupid people. We started out trying to be nice with these people and they seem to be getting worse instead of better. We're thinking about selling our house at a loss as a better alternative than living next to these @ssholes.

You won't know unless you give it a shot. Here's the deal... you can only keep your side of the street clean. I learned in college that a lot of people aren't bothered by noise, thus, they don't understand how other people can be. My college roomate could sleep through a marching band playing in her bedroom... me? I wake up if a mouse farts in the next room. She couldn't understand why I hated her playing music after midnight. She figures, "It doesn't bother me, so it shouldn't bother you!" Wrong. She grew up in a large family, I'm an only child.

There's plenty of excuses, but it's best to at least give it an honest shot. You already think the neighbor is an A-hole... worst case scenario is that your current oppinion is confirmed.

I would talk to them. Most times people just live their lives they way they feel fit and they don't even realize the neighborhood is affected. You say there are loud noises on the week days. Well, my husband and I both work in restaurants. There is no such thing as a weekend to us. We never think to say, "It's Tuesday, we should go to bed early". We think, "It's our day off! Let's have fun!" I doubt most people irritate their neighbors intentionally. It's best to communicate with your neighbors and leave the landlord and police out of it.

Well I'd at least try once or twice. After that I'd call the po-po!Let them handle it! Just remember they will probably know it's you who called though!
Are they renting or do they own? That would be a big factor on what you should do also. If these RUDE people are homeowners, you could have long term problems. If they are only renters, try contacting their landlord!
Good Luck!

Honestly, I would talk to them first, and if that doesn't resolve the problem, just ignore them, or if they keep being really annoying then call the cops.
