Hi:

All of a sudden while driving, the card engine seemed to start making a different clunky noise, and the engine was really running roughly. This car has performed well over its life, and has had very few problems. I need to probably change the oil in it, and it is overdue. Any information about what might be the problem based on this description about this before I take it in would be very greatly appreciated.

Hi:

Thank you all for your thoughts - they are truly appreciated. On Monday, I'll check to see if I can take it into a mechanic. Thanks again.

Watch out for the timing belt. If it breaks, you'll be stranded. Get it changed before you're stuck somewhere.

You may change the oil, clean the fuel supply system and also the air intake filter. Carbon deposits in the spark plugs should be scrapped. In case water has somehow mixed with the fuel, it may also cause rough running of the engine. You have mentioned about the engine 'making different clunky noise' This appears a serious matter and will have to be looked into by a mechanic. Before going to the mechanic , you may search under the hood for any extreneous matter like twig, metel parts, wire etc.present there , clashing with moving parts like fan, belts etc.

Not enough info. It could be an internal wear problem (expensive), or a stretched timing belt (moderate), but it could be a cracked vacuum hose (cheap). Don't put off having a professional look at it. If it is repairable, it is wise to limit further possible damage.

Sound like you skipped a cog on your timing belt. The rubber belt has "teeth" and one might have broken off. Your timing is off. Have it checked. It will fail completelysoon and you will be an a world of grief.
