lack of respect for self or others. in other words, something lacking in the way people are being raised.

added. it is not the lack of punishment, nor are libs to blame. lack of appropiate punishment in regards to the crime would be a more realistic statement. we have minor crimes being punished more than major crimes

Drug addiction...poverty in poor parts of the world...most crimes are about getting money to support a drug using lifestyle. Root cause of drug addiction itself if partly (in my opinion) a lack of self respect and hope for the future, caused by parents/society giving up on young ppl I also believe there's a genetic cause..

But root cause for most crime I believe is Drug addiction for sure, at least nowadays.

Greed could cause crimes such as murder, robbery and muggings, etc...

And just psychological problems that seem to drive people to kill or torture for pleasure, or to satisfy compulsions.
Those would probably be the two biggest for me.

Of course you could talk about assassinations for political power. But that kinda falls under greed I guess.

There are people who want to blame it all on the gap between the haves and the have-nots, there are people who want to blame it on the poor upbringing of our kids by yuppie parents, since they held the kids either too little or too much when they were babies, and there are those who are really nutty and want to blame all crime on guns. Then there are still some real wackos left who want to blame movies, TV, video games and objectionable song lyrics.

I blame drugs. This whole idea of "if it feels good, do it," perpetuated more by liberals than conservatives for certain, leads to drug abuse, which leads to property crimes, and at higher levels leads to violent crimes. Drugs are a big root cause of ALL kinds of crime, and there is far too little discouragement of drug abuse around here. (I don't blame any political party for the lack of discouragement, really, but it is interesting that drug abuse among teens was higher during the Clinton Administration than it is now.)

Another root cause of crime is the lack of real punishment. That, we can blame the do-gooder liberals for.
