I am learning guitar in a class, and the class lent us a guitar. Problem is, I have large fingers, and when I go to do a C Chord, my fingers kind of touch the other strings so they don't make the sound they're supposed to. Any suggestions on how to improve on this?

Yes, my fingers are standing up, the bottom of my finger barely touches the string below it, but it still mutes the sound for that string.

I've got big fingers too, you just have to be more precise. Or I suppose you could try a classical guitar where the strings are spaced a little wider.

This is something that needs to be brought to the attention of your instructor --- or, actually, they should be able to notice the problem on their own quite rapidly --- it could be a touch of what both of your first responders have mentioned here --- if you are using proper finger placement techniques and are STILL muting other strings -- you definitely may need to look into getting a wider necked guitar !! There again, if you are NOT using proper finger placement techniques -- wider neck or not -- you will still see ill effects from this tendency until you get in the groove of it all and get it down right !!

Are you sure your fingers are standing and not lying down? When I started I tended to bend my fingers down and when it came to arpegios they got in the way. But if your fingers are standing up then they hopefully wont get in the way of the other strings.
By the way thats a blessing(or at least from my point of view) you have to have large fingers, for people like me with average sized fingers it can be hard to reach other frets.

This is a problem. If you move your thumb to the center of the neck, you will hear a difference. Your wrist may say ouch! Move the neck closer to your shoulder. Look at Jimi or Page. Rock on.

I agree with your first two answers. It'll just take practice, and most importantly, patience. Please keep in mind that learning guitar doesn't happen overnight. The more you practice, the better you'll eventually be. Take your time with this...and practice practice practice. Eventually it'll all come together. Have a good day.
