what if you try and suggest a solution and they don't listen. So now they've laid their problem on you and then tell you they can't do anything about it.

What does that mean??

People have a need to discuss their problems with a friend, I always listen, but if the problem concerns a couple, I never take sides knowing that in the near future the couple will reconcile, and I`ll be the bad one for taking someone`s part. If the problem involves only the one person and I have some knowledge that could help them resolve the problem, I will voice my opinion. If the problem is beyond my scope, I listen, but say little.

People are looking for help. If you can listen or help them out it is a plus. This is what friends do.
