Why is this so? I can remember details of events that goes back to 20 years but can never remember names of new friends/acquaintance after 3 secs, unless I re-asked for the 2nd or 3rd time. So, can you tell me if my memory is good or bad?

I like this question becasue i have the same problem. Now here is the real reason, but you have to be open for it as it is not what you expected. you do not remember names because it is not important for you. you simply prefer focusing on yourself than on others. introvert?

Mr Thinker is pretty much right. You have to work at remembering names and not concentrate on making sure you mention your own name to the new acquaintances.

I used to work in sales and you can train yourself to remember names. Start by really paying attention and saying "hello, Joe. It's nice to meet you". Think "Joe" in your mind and concentrate on remembering it. I have heard the name needs to remain in your thinking brain for 7 seconds before it forms a more permanant memory.
