Due to the weird tie-breaking rules they have, Cleveland (95-65) is now guaranteed to play New York, with the Indians carrying home-field advantage. Los Angeles (93-67) would have to win both their final games and Cleveland would have to lose both their final games to force a tie. Normally season series would decide who wins that tie-breaker scenario, but the Indians and Angels tied their season series 5-5. The Indians performed much better in their own division, though, so they get the nudge, and so it will be New York @ Cleveland and Los Angeles @ Boston.

I think MLB will set up a tiebreaker by who won the season series between the Indians and Angels. Whoever won the season series between those two teams will be the 1st seed and will take on the Yankees in the ALDS this year.

Since the Yankees cannot play the East champion Red Sox in the first round, it came down to the Indians and Angels to see who would play the Wild Card Yankees. With the Indians up two games, and holding the tie-breaker on the Angels with two to play, Cleveland clinched the berth vs. New York.
