I'm looking for those old, ornate letters used in ancient text, like in old Bibles. I haven't found anything similar online or in any font selection. I like the symbolic use of flowers and vines, usually also painted in gilt, some include Celtic borders and symbols. Any reference books? Anything in Caligraphy books? Any suggestions?

you need to go to a used book store like "half price books" in Austin, tx. Look fror books on lettering and font style as well as printing catalogs (those were used in the 30sthru the 60s top help printers interface with their customers) Look fror all books on sign painting and air brushing. or just call "Asel art supply" in Austin,Tx. and ask for "Lisa wright", she can direct you to what you want....tell her "Rick in Oregon" told you to call her.512 476-1762.

Hi! Here are bunches. I love these elements too. You want the 'Grammar of Ornament" (many pages are displayed here, I just listed a few.. keep scrolling), by Owen Jones. Dover Books has superb designs with CD's. And many fabulous 'Initial' fonts, as well. (more below). Hope this helped.... have fun!
