3 young boys contracted this amoebic infection in my community this year. One of them likely caught it from a swimming pool that had not been properly maintained-that was a first to me.
Encephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri is very rare, however, even with treatment, this infection often results in death.
I don't think we've done a good enough job of informing people about taking precautions when water temperatures are very warm.

Yup... But chill.-These things have been around FOREVER. It's only reciently that Scientists have figured out what killed a few people off every year for what used to be "no discernable reason". There's nothing anyone can really do about it- it's such a rare thing. Amoebas are part of the Aquatic "Landscape". And you just happen to be REALLY unlucky, & in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time- to have one kill you like that.
