I heard the song "Vincent" by Don McLean today. I want to write a song like that but I'm having trouble finding some good chords to pick. McLean fingerpicked G, Am, and C for the verse and it sounded so sweet. I want to write a song. Anybody got some suggestions that I can not steal, build off of?

There really aren't THAT many chords to choose from, popular songs are always using the same chords as other songs and people don't accuse them of stealing. You can make it your own by using a different rhythm or order of chords, or using the same chords but picking different strings... or the same strings in a different order. You could also try things like adding your pinkie finger to a chord, or taking a finger off a chord for slight variations.

Experiment and have fun! If you like the way something sounds, keep it and build on it. If you don't like it, don't play it again (but keep it in mind for a song in the future. :) ) There's no right or wrong really. If you like it and it sounds good to you, then it's your song!

Well, if you do not already know the way to play the guitar, take courses. Once you understand how to play guitar and your instructor has taught you a few elementary conception, you'll arise with a chord development. Then whilst you play the chord development in your guitar, sing a melody over best of it. Then upload lyrics.
