I don't leave silly messages on my answering machine because I get calls from several doctor's and dentist's offices and my mother's nursing home and my family long distance...
So I leave a nice pleasant message that is easy to hear and understand...
My husband wants to leave some silly message in a silly voice, but I do not want to have to have some important call come in to have to hear that...
We also got a new phone and have not learned the way to change things yet, so we are using the computer voice...
Besides, we also have people we avoid, and if they hear our voice and recognize it, they will keep calling...
If they aren't sure they have the right number, maybe they wont call back...
And I would never leave our number or name...
Too many people will call back pretending to know you...
We even have and pay for an unlisted number so we aren't even in the phone book...
We get less nuisance calls that way...

My mom always told me to say the number, but never leave my name on the outgoing message. She also told me that I shouldn't actually say that I'm not there. I'm not sure why, but I have always been careful to take her advice. Right now, mine says
"Hi, you've dialed (number). We're not accepting phone calls right now, but please leave your name and number so that we can get back with you at a better time. Thanks"
Oh yeah, she also told me to always say "we", even when I lived alone. She seemed to think that there was an awful lot the criminal mind could do with the information in an outgoing message.

I guess it's just a basic message. Some tech-impaired people are like.. "OMG IT DOESN'T TELL ME TO LEAVE A MESSAGE.. WHAT SHOULD I DO??" I guess it's faster to just say "Hi this is Bob, sorry I'm not here, please leave a message, Bye." instead of "Hola, amigo. This is Senor Bob who is out tangoing with a hot senorita. Leave me a love recording, mi amor." OK that was a total perverted example, but anyway. Lack of creativity might be a cause?

For the same reason everybody answers a ringing residence phone with "Hello". Good manners. "Please leave a message...."
beats the holy heck out of 15 seconds of LOUD! bad music.
For me, anyway...
I seriously dislike rude people or game-players on the phone. It's an instrument of communication, not a video game.
*for: no name... Your Mom was right.

when i was younger i was more creative and made up a lil song to the tune of camptown races...it went a something like this:
leave a message at the tone, do da do da
we'll call you when we get home, oh the do da day
make the message brief, sorry for the grief
we'll call you when we get home, oh the do da day
nerdy, rite?

I don't care what their answering machine says, as long as they don't go on forever before I can leave the message.

We are familiar with it. I do enjoy the other types of messages people have though.

Lot's of people have that message. I use this.
"Hello, I'm trying to avoid someone I don't want to talk to. Please leave a message. If I don't call you back, it's you!"
