About 25 years ago I was a night clerk at a gas station. A guy came in to rob me at gun point and suddenly, right in the middle of the robbery, turned and ran away! He didn't wait for the money or anything. There was no one there but me. I have never understood this. I was only 25, a woman and he was a young guy who was stronger than me and larger. I just don't understand why he ran and neither did the police but we had it on tape? Any ideas??? He was wearing mask and they never caught him.

Ms Crone, That happens a lot more often than you even realize. ALL too often robberies are begun by folks who are just going through hard times and when it comes right down to it, they discover that THEY have a conxcience and realize that they couldn't live with thte guilt of actually ROBBING someone and change their minds and take off. Sometimes that's the ONLY time that they ever try it. Sometimes, they decide that it IS worth the risk and try and complete it again.

You were fortunate, it was probably his first and ONLY time doing something dumb and stupid like that. It IS obvious that he wasn't a career criminal, they rarely let people off without completeing the crime.

Perhaps at the last second he realized that he was about to potentially ruin his life for a paltry $100. Stranger things have happened. At least you know he probably wasn't a career criminal and you got off very easy.

I've heard of aborted robberies before, but usually when something unexpected happens.

It sounds like he had last second regrets. Maybe fear of getting caught or realisation of doing something very wrong.

He panicked. Armed robbery carries quite a wallop of hard time upon conviction. It happens. You sure were lucky he didn't hurt you!
