Hi there people,

I have only had my period for about two years now... As you can see I am only fourteen years old. I've been noticing that during my period I get huge blood clots, and I mean huge!! Is it normal for someone my age? Because I've been searching for answers for women but they were usually answers for older women... but I am only 14 so I am just checking up here to make sure I am okay.
This has kind of been freaking me out for a while now, because I usually have big clots every month. Whenever I am sitting down for some time, then when I get up, the blood clots just come out like crazy... Many people have told me it's normal for my age, considering my cycle isn't stable yet... but I just want to make sure this is healthy.
Just to let you guys know that I always have heavy flows, usually more than 8 days. I never really get cramps when getting these clots. Please help? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you.

I always had heavy flows as a teenager - and big clots - and have never had a satisfactory answer from a gyno... but then, not all mysteries CAN be solved. But there are a few different things that COULD be causing this:

1. Are you sexually active? (God I hope not, you are too too young for that) If so, large clots and heavy cramping are also symptoms of miscarriage sometimes. But as you have this problem with every mense, then this is highly unlikely.
2. Do the women in your family have a history of uterine problems? Or heavy flows? Or fibroids? Discuss this with your mother and your doctor. Find out the facts: http://www.4women.gov/faq/fibroids.htm#1
3. Do you have or have you ever had a disease of the blood? Sometimes if you have certain blood conditions it can affect your flow.
4. Do you drink enough water? Dehydration can also play a part in how heavy your flow is and the consistency. If you are not drinking enough water, your flow may become thick and chunky.
5. One reason why you may be experiencing large clots is that your body may not be able to produce enough of a clotting factor to match the amount of blood you have flowing out. The clotting factor makes it so that your period blood is thinner and resists clotting, but if you run out and still have more period to go, you will experience large clots and heavy cramping because the clots have to pass through your cervix. There are any number of factors that could be causing this. That is why it is best to see your doctor so that they can evaluate your symptoms and check your hormone levels. Once the root of the problem is found, they can provide ways to prevent and treat it.

Best of luck and hope that this information helps you! :)

I'm not trying to scare you or anything. You really should go the gyno. I was 22 when I started having heavy periods and big clots and it turned out I had a fibroid tumor. I always thought older women were the ones to have problems and I was majorly wrong. Women with problems keep getting younger and younger.

When you say heavy flow and big clots, are you soaking a pad or tampon in less than an hour?? If you are, then that means you're hemmoraging and you need to go to the Emergency Room.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. I'm always willing to tell my story of living with fibroids and my advice on them. I'll be thinking about you.

My doctor has told me that clots bigger than a nickel are not normal. I also had fibroids and that is what happened. The longer they went on the heavier the bleeding got. I waited a while before I went to the doctor. I would make an appointment with a doctor very soon. Problems are easier to treat when they are caught early. Webmd is a great place to read up on things like this.

Yes - at least it sounds very much like when I was your age. (11 - 13 days each month and crazy cramps!) It changed after the first couple years.
But of course you should probably have a check-up to make sure your not becoming anemic or needing extra vitamins & minerals to balance out your body.

P.S. If doc says you need vitamins don't take real cheap vitamins to save money, it's worth it to spend a little more and get quality ingredients (less fillers & binders = more for your $$)

EDIT: Please DO NOT take anything without your parents permission (holistic or otherwise).

Love your name! Blessings!

You could have endometriosis or something, I think you should definitely see a doctor. Heavy flow, long period and big clots sounds horrible! Even if it turns out you don't have a specific gynaecological condition, the doctor might well be able to give you medication to improve your quality of life.

You need to make an appointment with your gynecologist (if you have one) and if not, then your family doctor. I know this is common in older women, but 14 seems a little young to me. Also, with a very heavy flow, you could be getting anemic. It would be best to talk to your doctor so you don't have to be scared or worried about this.

short, sweet, and to the point-
yeah, it's normal.

i was like that, and over about three years my period finally evened out. i was a little worried at first, too, but my sister assured me that it's normal. eventually, i started taking the pill, and it lightened my periods a little
as long as it's not accompanied by pain or unusual symptoms, i wouldn't be seriously concerned.
if you really think it's a problem, talk to your mom, or someone who you feel like you can discuss the problem with (setting a bad example i know, but i usually didn't go to my mom, but my sister or a friend's mom first, you know, work out the kinks before i try it on mom). if you're seriously concerned, go to a gyno, and if they say it's normal, ask about getting on the pill.
