18 in California (used to be 21).

This law is based on the capacity to sign a contract. There are rentals on line that sometimes rent out places based on fake IDs issued to minors. These contracts are nullified on the spot when discovered.

Child stars have been able to work around this legislation by asking the court for a special order based on their occupation.

well you can get legally emancipated at 16 but you have to prove that you can support yourself, you have a place to live and you are receiving passing grades in school or have a GED. ^This almost never happens unless at least one of parents is on your side in court. You cannot however legally rent an apartment so you will have to live with friends / family and they will have to go to court too to testify that you may live with them. emancipation does not make you an adult it just legally takes you out of your parents care and into your own / the state's. Emancipation was intended for kids from bad homes.
