There was no name. The blazed their own trail.
Most of the time they travelled by river, with the exception of crossing the Rocky Mountians in Idaho and Montana. The roads, as we know them today would follow these rivers, the Ohio, Missouri, Columbia, Maries, Clark's Fork of the Columbia, Salmon and Snake. Most of the route in Montana for instance is I - 90 near the Yellowstone River.

They made their own trail, for the first official way. It was called "the Lewis and Clark trail" after that.

In 1978 I took that same trail and followed it most of the way across the great plains all the way into and, through the mountains, an exhausting but, exhilarating trip.

It was called the Lewis and Clark Trail - but not when they travelled it. At that time, it was just an Indian trail that they were following.
At times, it was roughly parallel to the trail that Alexander McKenzie followed, ten years prior to Lewis and Clark.

a lot of the journey used the river network Boat builders were adapting a 55 foot Keelboat, which could be sailed, rowed, poled like a raft, or towed from the riverbank. In addition to the Keelboat, two wooden row boats called Pirogues were taken to hold men and supplies.
