I have a leak in the main water line going from the timer valve to the house, i also contacted the city and was told it is my responsibility to fix it because it is within my area. I have a 30 year old house with a basement i am living in norther Utah can anyone give me depths about the burried line and also what kind of pipe will i find; pvc, copper, etc.

You stated that you have a basement----If you go down there and look around you will see the water line coming into the house.Measure up to grade and you have the depth and location.
A 30 year old line is most likely copper not lead.

The main line from the street to your house is under the frost layer as stated - anywhere from 4-6 feet - the best result is from a qualified insured plumber , also as stated. You are wise to get the survey of where all your underground lines are BEFORE you dig- you dont want to be paying to have more utilites fixed. Since its not too old, i dont think galvanized would be used - its most likely black plastic or rolled copper.

If you call a larger plumbing company they can use an instrument and tell you where the leak is. I used them in Vegas many times, they are very accurate, it saves a lot of time to know where the leak is.

u will find copper my house was and it's old, it cost me 1200.00 for a back hoe and replacement of the water line. ohio 10 yrs ago

they are buried below the frost line, where ever that is in your region. 4 feet usually. call the county and ask what were the requirements 30 years ago, then you'll know.
