I am on a cheap bugget and I have to build a cage for my rabbit. But I have a promblem....what should I use for the bottom?......Plastic or Wood? If I use wood when the rabbit pees it will soak up in the would and the wood will rot and have a strange smell to it, But if I use plastic where do I get it and is it cheap?

Use coroplast and shavings. Coroplast can be found at Home Depot. It is corrugated plastic and you cut it to hold the shavings. You can clean and disinfect it too. Wood cages are cheap but as you said, it will soak up the pee and rot, not to mention bugs like to live in the wood like mites and lice, etc. It is very difficult to disinfect a wood cage. You can buy the coroplast new or find a gas station or some place that has an old sign made out of it that they are throwing out. Check out Cavycages.com for a better picture of what I am trying to explain. I built one of these cages myself and my Guinea Pigs love it. Good Luck!

THe poster ~Bunny~ is right about the NIC cubes! The only thing I wanted to add a suggestions is to get a litter box! You can find how to litter train online, but usually bunnies will pick a corner to go in and always go there. Just put the box there and they will soon only go in that spot, or mostly. Otherwise get the cheap linoleum for the bottom, it will be much easier to clean. For litter, don't use pine shavings! They cause respiratory problems and are smelly. You want to get a newspaper-based litter or something similar. You can get suggestions and lots of info: http://www.rabbit.org

Good luck they are great pets and lucky to have someone working so hard to make sure they are happy!

There is something called coroplast that you could use for the bottom. You can find it somewhere like Home Depot.

If you are on a cheap budget and you are building an idoor cage, use NIC grids.

That is a great link to a tutorial to make an NIC cage. Email me if you have any questions about the cage or just normal rabbit questions.

use wood and lay down the linoleum squares that are sold at home improvement stores. They are easy to wipe down every day. Get a litter pan at your pet store, made specifically for rabbits in a triangular shape with a high back (they sometimes back up and pee over the side of the cat litter boxes). Don't use cat litter, as the dust is harmful to the rabbits. Look for corncob bedding for birds, which is absorbant, holds in most odor, and is not harmful. Just be sure to change the litter pan every day!

Actually the cheapest to build is a wire cage, but if you are going to put in a floor you can use eather treated lumber such as treated 1 x 6 boards or something like a marine plywood to use for the flooring. I wouldn't recommend plastic. Plastic can be slick and can be easy for them to chew through.

Maybe you shouldn't have gotten a bunny if you can't afford one. Call your local SPCA and ask for any old cages they may have. I know tractor supply sells some pretty cheap cages here.
