No, you couldn't hear it even 5 cm away.
You need a medium (like air or water) to carry the sound.
So you would only "hear" it through vibrations in the ground that you might feel through your boots.

What a bizarre question! Why a whale? Why not a jackal or an orangutan?

Have you recently been impressed by a sound made by, or attributed to, a whale?

I presume you mean you, also, would be on the moon and out in the open and 5 meters away from your poor, dead whale. You would be dead, too, of course.

That is a very stupid question, as if a whale was on the moon, it would be dead. Also, in space, there is no medium as air, water, or a solid as it is a partial vacuum. Lastly, why 5 meters? Itll be the same 5 miles, 5 light years, or 5 atoms away.

i don't think that u can hear it from te moon like it was 5 meters away cuz the moon is further from than the distance of us to india ( im indian) and if a whale moaned in india we could have heard it its just a saying about the whale and moon

What a strange question. The fact is that not only would the whale die very quickly (which would be very cruel), but we couldn't hear it because there's no atmosphere or other fluid (eg. water) to transmit the sound.

It's basically the same question as: If we placed an unprotected human on the moon, could we hear him/her scream.? No.. .but what a gruesome thought!

You would hear no sound from the whale,it requires some medium to transmit the sound.
If a meteor roared by you one foot away there would be no sensation,if it did the same thing on earth the pressure wave would kill you.

No, sound is an effect of particles vibrating through the air, so if it were on the moon, there would be no particles to vibrate and make sound.

It would talk to you telepathically and say "Help me! *whale death cry*". Everyone knows brain waves travel unimpeded through space. =p
