Water expands when it freezes.
Your heater core is full of water.
If the water freezes in the heater core, it will rip it apart.

The REAL story I think you read is the fact that if you don't have the recomended 50/50 water antifreeze mix in your cooling system the a/c system can freeze the heater core and cause it to leak. The a/c evaporator, the part that makes cold air, is located in your heater and uses the heater fan to blow cold air. It can get cold enough, under certain conditions, to freeze the heater core.

it will cause more than that ,it can cause the engine to freeze and bust also, the heater core is the least of your worries when this happens, without having a 50/50 mix in it ,it will freeze and bust ,and the heater core will also bust, but the engine always gets it first, keep it a least a 50/50 mix,and you,ll be alright with it.

Not true. Even if you are very low on anti-freeze, some of it will pump through (not enough to provide heat) but it's still anti-freeze. Expansion and contraction have little effect on the heater core. Pure water will bust it wide open in a deep freeze.
