The San Diego Padres and the New York Mets have meanings behind their names. The Padres is a religious name, spanish for Fathers, ever hear them called the Friars. The Mets is a shortened form of the Metropolitans, or city-dwellers.

From the team history section of the New York Mets website:

March 6, 1961 - The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc., formally receives a certificate of membership from National League President Warren Giles. The Mets' name was judged by club owner Joan Payson as the one that best met five basic criteria:
1) It met public and press acceptance;
2) It was closely related to the team's corporate name (Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc);
3) It was descriptive of the metropolitan area;
4) It had a brevity that delighted copy readers everywhere;
5) It had historical background referring to the Metropolitans of the 19th century American Association. Other names considered included Rebels, Skyliners, NYBs, Burros (for the five boroughs), Continentals, Avengers... as well as Jets and Islanders, names that would eventually find their way onto the New York sports scene.

Just think, if things had gone a little differently, tonight you might be asking what an NYB is.

I thought a Phillie was one of those frozen balls of snot you see on some guys mustaches in the winter. A Padre is a Monk and a Metropolitan is a Met.

As you can see I'm not a Phillies fan. I have an education beyond grade three so I don't qualify to be one.

Yes, how typically arrogant and ignorant. "Padre" means "father" in Spanish, as in "Priest" It's a tribute to the large Hispanic population in So Cal (I'm sure you don't get that either.) "Met" is short for "Metropolitan" an allusion to a big city.

"Padre" is Spanish for "father"

I'm not sure what a Met is supposed to be.
