This started around the early 1980's in the gothic rock scene, and offshoot of the post-pung genre. Styles of dress within the subculture range from death rock, punk, androgynous, medieval, some Renaissance and Victorian style clothes, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair.
You can read about it here:

When I asked a goth girl in California about it several years ago, she told me the 'death warmed over' style of the goth movement was a reminder that nobody is guaranteed tomorrow, so party down today.

yes, for sure. It doesn't look good on everyone. I really like it on some people though. I just colored my hair dark black with red highlights. So, I thought I'd try the black nails. They didn't look right on me. I bought a charcoal silvery color- it gives almost the same effect but worked better on me. Didn't look quite so gothic or young or something...

yes but if you want the dark without the edge -go for a black with purple or red "highlights"-its actually really pretty and dark polish makes short nails look longer.

Yes most people like black now (I don't understand why though) but also because black matches everything so you don't have to change it everyday. Then again 'emo' is suddenly a trend (don't understand that either) lol but yes it's kind of weird isn't it?

It has become a fad to have black nail polish because it goes with everything. I don't really care for it.

This has been going on for years. I think history repeats itself! I have also noticed ppl doing multicolored. (different color on each nail or alternating 2 colors.) To each his own, I suppose!!

Well, its been like that for awhile now. What gets me the most is when guys have black nails.. can you really picture them getting the nail polish out and doing it? I dunno.. but yeah, black nail polish is out there.
