My guess is prostitution is illegal because the government doesn't get a cut.

I think both should be totally legal. However, I wouldn't want the mob cartels to run things like prostitution, nor pimps. If it's the woman's choice, it should also be HER business venture, and hers alone. Some man there skimming her earnings off the top should never be allowed.
By the way, you know prostitution IS legal in some places in Nevada. Check out The Chicken Ranch online. It's just not legal INSIDE the county Las Vegas is located in, but outside the county, it is.
EDIT: TO Steven25t: Abortion has been around as long as humankind has been around. There are ancient Sumerian documents from 5000 years ago,. as well as documents found in buried Temples all over the world from thousands of years ago that showed and discussed the different plants women would take that were abortificants (caused abortion). It is in no way a 20th century invention.

Generally speaking, even the most promiscuos females are not going to have as many partners as a prostitute does, so I think the idea behind making prostitution illegal is the public health risk...STDs could be spread easily if precautions aren't taken. However, there are brothels that require frequent testing of the workers; but that still doesn't ensure that clients won't be bringing any diseases to the table. It's a risky setup...but I do believe it should be legal.
As for abortions...I think the mother's right as a human being trumps those of an embryo without a brain or nervous system. Period.

The reason abortion is available is because women campaigned for it, and because of the horrible things that happened like back-street abortions with coathanger wire, etc. Legalising it was more to do with circumstancial and practical rather than philosophical reasons. Prostitution should be legalised, it's so dangerous for the women who do it, but it doesn't happen because of the power of religious groups and general attitude towards prostitutes.
I guess it just goes to show that a lot of decisions aren't based on logic but people's prejudices.

Prostitution has been made legal here in NZ and although I do not agree with the act itself their have been benefits for these women, for the most part and from what I gather (as I am not one myself) they are safer as now they do the act indoors as opposed to in the car or a dark alley, cleanliness is a priority and all rooms within the brothel have showers and baths or have them close by (that must be used before during or after each client), and condoms are a must.
Im not saying it is this way for all and their are ladies that still frequent the streets and some brothels sub-standard however I do believe it is a safer alternative therefore I do say legalise prostitution.
Abortion; again another touchy subject and again one that I do not agree with however I do have friends who have reasons (more valid to them rather than me) for having it, therefore I see it as a personal issue and one that can only be made by the person having it.

Very true, and a good argument. Strangely I think prostitution is not immoral while I think abortion is; however I'm strongly for both to be legal and safe for all involved.

Prositiution and abortion are two different things. Abortion is a private decision a woman makes, whereas prostitition can be public. Frankly, it seems the only reason there is so much opposition to prostitution is because officials don't want prosititutes clogging up their nice clean streets.

You do make a good point, however diseases are spread through sex, and many people are not going to care if they give a prostitute an std. It is reckless and dangerous, and should not be legal.
As for abortions, I feel , unless a woman has been raped, or it is a matter of life and death for the woman, abortion should not be legal. Abortion is not a form of birth control. JMO

Abortion generates taxable profits. Prostitution does not. And I don't believe that bull about prostitution being illegal for health reasons either. If that's true why is promiscuity legal as long as you don't get paid?
Just in case you didn't get it, I was agreeing with you. Legal, illegal, it's all about money.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that prostitution is illegal and I think your comparison between the two things is valid. There is absolutely no reason why government should be able to tell anyone what they can and can't do with their bodies.
