We've all heard of the "good old days" from our parents and our grandparents. "When the movies were a nickle!" and "We stuffed 20 people in the backseat and cruised main street!"

What "good old days" stories will you tell your grandchildren?

I grew up in a small town with a real Main Street, a local drug store, two local banks, and a big grassy town square with a neo-Federalist courthouse surrounded by wide brick streets. I spent my summer afternoons in the pool at the YMCA, then walked up Main Street to the shoe store my mom worked at to get a ride home.

With my five-dollar allowance I could buy 8 comics books, a Super Bubble and still get a couple of pennies back - 3 cents on the dollar sales tax. I lived for grape slushes at the Sonic and Friday nights in the summer going to the latest movie with my mom. One steamy southern summer night, at the age of 7, I sat on the hood of my father's Plymouth at the drive-in and watched "Star Wars" for the very first time.

When the mail came, "It's just Bill's" I never could figure out why Bill didn't get mail at his own house. And when the phone rang, it was never for me, but I always wanted to answer it. It's still that way actually. :)

The first time I pumped gas, I paid 68 cents a gallon, and the biggest Coke at the gas station was an enormous 16-oz. in a glass bottle. The Coke was more expensive than the gas.

Ah, youth in the 1970's. Who in their right mind would think of a pea green leisure suit for a 7 year old to wear on a 12 hour plane ride. The cross country drive in a Chevy Vega, riding in the BACK of an open pick up truck with no seat belts, sitting in line for hours to buy gas, and the days of Dad's TV remote being this "Hey you! Go change the channel!"
The thrill of the Apollo Moon Program. We had an astronaut visit our school, and I've been hooked ever since.
And then the ever popular where were you when questions;
when President Reagan was shot
when John Lennon was shot
when the space shuttles blew up
on 9/11 ......the sad times.
You kids today have it so easy! When I was in school we had to WALK to school, ALONE. 5 miles, up hill both ways, through waist deep snow, fighting off bears with my three ring binder! We didn't have back packs, we had to strap our books together with an old belt. Which came in handy to fight off the Indians when they attacked our wagon train. Until I was 11 my mother had me convinced that she crossed the prairie in a covered wagon!

That you didn't have to worry about someone bringing a gun to school. Prejudice was rarely heard of in the 60's. Everyone was friends & it didn't matter what color you were. Peace & love were in the air. It was just a wonderful time. I agree with Stephen Kings statement at the end of "Stand By Me". He said "I've never had friends like the ones I had when I was twelve. Does anybody?"

When I was your age, we didn't have the Internet! we had to call somebody or drive over to their house if we wanted to chat!
And we didn't have DVDs either. We had to watch videotapes. With poor quality video at that. And high definition meant the dictionary was up on a shelf!

Heck, we didn't even have Cd's when I was your age. We had to get up and flip the record or the cassette tape over to listen to the second half.

And the only cell phones back then were when you were in jail!
