How do you figure this out?? What is it?

The most common is +2, next most common is +3. The best clue comes from looking at its position in the periodic table and knowing the properties of its column and its neighbors. It has 4 electrons in its outer shell. It takes less energy for it to lose some of those than to gain extras. Physical chemistry is the discipline which tries to figure out things like this from basic physics principles.

nickel is a metal, so its ion can only be charged positively. its valence can be 2 or 3, so its common charges are +2, +3.
