"According to the Olympic Charter, established by Pierre de Coubertin, the goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." (www.olympics.org)
The International Olympic Committee works year round to promote Olympisim in all countries. The Olympics are more than just a sporting event. It is the culmination of mind, body and will.
Additionally, the Olympic Truce, improvements on culture and education are all factors withing The Games. Yes, the Games were created to exhault the individual athlete on a global playing field, but the Olympic Movement is so much more than that.
One of my favorite quotes is by the founder, Pierre De Coubertin:The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.

Is this a serious question?
The Olympics are to provide a platform in which anyone from any country has an opportunity to compete against the entire world in many varying sporting events. They are held every four years in order to emphasize on the importance and drama associated with only one chance in many athlete's lifetimes to perform at the highest caliber. The Olympics are both a quest and reward for absolute athletic excellence in a spotlight that children from around the world can only dream of. Picture yourself having an opportunity to bear your Nation's flag in an International arena, the pride of your hometown, your region and your country.

Ostensibly, it's to celebrate the beauty of sport and the thrill of competition in their purest forms.
But their value as a brand, a spectacle, a generator of revenue, is what keeps them going on as we get farther and farther from the amateur ideals that were once at the core of the Olymipcs.
