Graphite is not poisonous. I have poked myself with pencils a couple of times, and made it through the skin (on accident, ok? I'm not very coordinated sometimes) and I'm still fine.

Is Lead In Pencils

2016-12-29 09:25:54 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

The lead in pencils is actually made of graphite. It was first called lead because it resembled the color and luster of lead.
However the puncture of the tip of a pencil may lead to a gray mark inside the skin for many years. The graphite is not poisonous and the consumption of lead is generally harmless... (Unless you consume large amounts)

Being injected with some into your blood stream, may not be the best thing, however; it will probably lead to death.

Good questions... Asking questions is how you learn, so don't be afraid to ask. And there is no stupid question.

It's *possible* that there was lead in the painted wood surrounding the graphite, but unlikely. The stuff inside pencils is graphite and clay, and maybe a very small amount of paraffin or oil, which are pretty harmless. Real lead hasn't been used for pencils four hundred of years.

THe graphite isnt poisonous. A sharp pencil will hurt you if stabben into you but it is the physical trauma that will generally kill you. No the graphite which is a form of carbon

No, they use graphite now which is layers of carbon. Lead, the element, is poisonous but its not in pencils. I'm sure you could call pencil lead deadly if it was used to stab you or something.

NO! I have had a whole pencil point broken off in my tush for decades - Becky Fry held out a freshly sharpened pencil as I was sitting down and it broke off clear back to the wood - the parents couldn't get it out at the time - I have had ZERO trouble with it.

Injected? Like you grind it up and shoot it up? Probably kill you deader than a doornail. If you just got poked with a pencil it won't hurt you. Won't hurt you if you eat it. I know. When I was in grade school, I ate a ton of pencils, wood, eraser, lead, and all. Didn't eat the little metal part.

Pencil lead is made of graphite, which is entirely made of the element carbon (C). No, it is not poisonous, but getting anything stuck into your body is not fun, or usually good for you. ... But it is not poison. It is actually the same ingredients in pencil lead as in a diamond! Just carbon (C)!
