If you're driving, you're already in D....turning the key off while driving and then back on is what we use to call "key bombs"----the raw gas in the fuel mixture will get into the exhaust system and when you turn the key back on, it will explode in the exhaust making a very loud boom and possibly blowing out the muffler over time if you do it enough. Use to scare the crap out of people driving nearby especially under bridges....it's like an old time backfiring truck. Otherwise, turning the key off may lock up the steering wheel and cause a loss of power brakes and steering for a time.

While you're driving, turning off the ignition by the key could lock your steering wheel. Other than that, you no longer have power steering or power brakes (if equipped if not you have booster only for about 3 pushes on the brake peddle before it becomes like rock) With automatics, putting it into drive, with the engine off, will do nothing.

You'll coast. Then you only have @ 3 times to step on the brakes before it hardens up and you have to literally stand on the brake pedal. Your power steering is get hard but still be able to maneuver for a good distance. Throwing it in "D" tells me it's an automatic so you will just coast because the clutch pack will disengage a little since it needs the engine to turn the transmission pump for the valve body in the tranny. Try it out and find out.

assuming you have an automatic trans from the "D" in your question you could cause serious transmission damage. your engine turns the torque converter which turns the front pump in the trans. if you turn off the ignition the pump turns off and no more lubrication. even if your in neutral. loose power steering, it can also cause serious catalytic converter damage in your exhaust by providing too much air to the catalyst. warp exhaust valves from cooling them too fast and if it's a carburated car when you turn the ignition back on you get a cool explosion in the exhaust that could actually blow up the muffler. literally. hope this helps.

The car will shut off and drive will do nothing.
But if you are doing 60 I think you can turn your ignition back on and your car will start without hitting the starter.

The engine shuts off. If your going 60 it is probably already in D (drive)

when you do this you run the risk of doing serious damage to something,if you throw it in park going that fast your going to mess the transmission up,not to mention probably have an accident, you wont have control over it anymore, good luck.
