What do you think when you go overseas, say to England or Australia and everybody is calling you a Yankee. You lot think is pertains to those in the Northern states, but people from other countries equate it to being from the USA.

How do you react?

Hi y'all.Well when I was in the military I had someone to say you YANKS have it made and I made this statement,"Sorry sir but I ain't no Yank I'm from Alabama so I'm a Southerner"
He looked at me then we went into the NCO Club and had a few beers.

it is odd to be referred to as a yankee, because southerners and northerners are still very discernable in the States. But I have been stopped on the street by strangers to hear my southern accent before; so to be called a Yankee - they are just reacting from their own knowledge and experience - nothing bad.

We understand national nicknames. Names like Brits and Limeys and Canucks and Aussies AND Yanks or Yankees.

We even named a movie that (Yanks) back in 1979. (OMG! Is Richard Gere REALLY that old??)

So if you happen to have met one or two Americans from southern states who did NOT know that, then you have proved that rednecks still exist.

We know that "yankee" or "yank" is continental slang for someone from the US...so we think nothing of it. (Civil War's been over a l-o-n-g time...)
